The beautiful, evocatively self-contained actress, Monica Vitti, passed away yesterday at the age of 90. Best known for her works with Michelangelo Antonioni, she was a perfect fit for that restrained and subtle director whose boldness was largely in compositions. Even in a scene where very little was required of her, Vitti exuded emotion like radioactive stone.
A whole argument seems to play out inside her and yet she seems to remain still at the same time. She was vulnerable and tenacious and always captivating.
She was in many great French and Italian films and many of them are available on The Criterion Channel including L'Avventura, La Notte, and Red Desert.
To speak of “cultural norms”

That was truly scary - and yet, no one actually touched her, and she knew she was in no real danger. An American woman would not know that; there'd be bad screaming, running or even physical violence, pepper spray, whatever. Yet note that Claudia was always free to leave and did so unmolested when Sandro returned.
